About Design & Survey
Horizontal Directional Drilling is a very specialized method of pipeline installation with many factors and requirements that need to taken into consideration. Trans American Underground maintains a design team of a Licensed Professional surveyor and field technicians who are experts in these requirements; they are available to assist our clients with proposals and presentations for pipeline alignments or perform a comprehensive review and HDD Profile for a current project. This provides an optimized value design for the client.
In our design department, we offer services at three different levels depending on your individual project needs: The Proposed HDD Alignment, Preliminary HDD Plan and Profile and HDD Design Plan & Profile with Utility Survey.
Level 1 Design – Proposed HDD Alignment
- Drive out route
- High resolution aerial photography at cost plus 10% or low resolution at no cost
- Drawing to provide general route corridor
- Route lengths
- Temporary work space size
- No on ground survey (alignment or topography)
- No profile on drawing
- No existing utilities on drawing
- No existing utilities survey
- Finished product for this level of design will be an aerial map showing proposed alignment of HDD and temporary work space need to complete HDD.

Level 2 Design – Preliminary HDD Plan & Profile
- All Level 1 Design information
- High resolution aerial photography at cost plus 10%
- Digital terrain model at cost plus 10% (where available)
- Supplemental ground survey with topography
- Profile on drawing
- No existing utilities survey

Level 3 Design – HDD Design Plan & Profile with Utility Survey
- All Level 1 & 2 Design information
- Complete ground survey with topography
- Survey of known existing utilities
- Add collected existing utility information to HDD design in plan & profile.

TAUG does not provide engineering services or boundary surveying for HHD designs.
